What is snow load

Snow load is an architectural term that refers to the calculated snow pressure acting on the top surface of a building or structure. The size of the snow load value mainly depends on the amount of snowfall in each region based on meteorological data, the roof form, the geometric size of the building, and the normal use of the building.


At present, the snow load value generally accounts for 10%-30% of the self-weight of the entire roof structure. Such a large snow load often causes large deformation of various roof structures, especially in cold and snowy areas. After heavy snowfall, the roof structure will be deformed. The structure not only produces large residual deformations, but sometimes also suffers structural damage. It is more serious in the low recesses of the roof. Due to the accumulation of snow, large overloads are formed in local areas, and the safety of general roof structures is low. Therefore, when carrying out structural design, caution should be taken and the snow load value should be properly handled.
